Squale watch details and photos from gnomonwatches.com.

Since the 1960’s, Squale was a name that is known for being one of the top manufacturers of dive watches. Evidently, they produced cases for many brands like Tag Heuer, Blancpain and Doxa. Their watches are not only well-designed aesthetically but further bringing out some ingenious innovations in them.

Limited Edition Individual numbers on the dial

Squale was commissioned by the Polizia Italiana di Stato Sommozzatori, Italian for Italian Police Dive Unit, to make a dive watch to commemorate their 60th anniversary. This watch has to be made to their specifications to meet their high demand for a dive watch. A total of 25 of this watch will be presented on the 8th of June 2018 to the Italian Police Dive Unit. Under the agreement between Squale and the Italian Police, only 60 pieces of the same watch will be available to the public, each individually numbered on the dial. We bring you, the new Squale 101 ATMOS Professional Marine Bronze Limited Edition (Ref. 2002/BRZ/LE60). This limited edition is available exclusively at Gnomon Watches.

Squale 101 ATMOS Bronze made for Polizia Italiana di Stato Sommozzatori

Starting with the specifications first, this tonneau case of their 101 ATMOS was something that was produced in the late 60s, being one of the 1000m dive watch pioneer, without the need of a helium escape valve(HEV). In comparison to another dive watch innovator, the Seiko’s first 600m Tuna ref. 6159-7010 came about in 1975; having a L shaped gasket instead of a common HEV.

The 1000 meters watch wears like a true diving piece, measuring 44mm in diameter and thanks to its lugless design only 49mm lug to lug. The lugless tonneau style reflects the 60s/70s vibe, with a smooth flowing look overall.

Wooden box with limited edition number engraved

The watch has taken an unprecedented approach by having an automatic helium valve escapement. It might seem ironic for the reason of have one HEV, since it’s root does not have one to reach deeper depth in the 60s, but this Limited Editions needed one to fulfill the requirements by the Italian police diving unit.

The main highlight is where Squale took a twist by transforming the 101 Atmos from a full steel watch into a Bronzo fiesta. The watch is made from marine grade bronze material, CuSn8. With wear, bronze creates a patina over time unique only to the owner. Bronze watches are a thing for the Italian military/police force which evidently can be seen in brands like Panerai, Anonimo, Ennebi and now Squale, which also has a genuine Italian DNA.

The watch keeps its famous snap-on rotary bezel that is made out of bakelite material and is colored in a multi-stage process, with hand applied SuperLuminova. Moving on to the dial, Squale uses a vintage and matching cigar-brown colored applied hour markers, to match the case. The logo and all other wordings are done in the same color tone, with a few changes like having the word “Bronze” in the shark logo at the bottom, along with the limited edition number.

At the back of the Bronze 101 we see the new casebook is engraved fully with an updates interpretation of the classic wave-lines design and Squale’s logo.

Mechanical reliability is guaranteed by the tried and tested ETA 2824-2 which Squale has been working with for around 50 years.

The strap choice is worth a mention as the Squale 101 ATMOS Professional Marine Bronze Limited Edition is paired with a superb familar Italian made vintage shark leather. Squale approached Pre-Vendome strap makers to pair this limited edition watch with one of the best strap maker in the industry. Given the grainy textured and lasting built, this strap reminisces like those found on the Pre-Vendome Panerai Luminor 5218s from the 90s.

The limited edition Squale 101 ATMOS Bronze comes in a special wooden box finished in the same blue Squale is famous for. Like the watch, the wooden box is also individually engraved with the limited edition number.

All in all, this is a very very unique watch. Squale’s first collaboration with the Polizia Italiana di Stato Sommozzatori. Its genuine connections with the Italian Police dive unit makes this a highly collectible watch in time to come. Search for any watch brand that issued watches to the forces and you will know how sought after they are. The first 101 ATMOS bronze, the first Squale x Italian Police watch and limited only to 60 pieces, there is no reason this won’t be a classic in the making. This is also the first time such a watch is made available to the public. Like all Squale limited edition, there is speculation that the price may appreciate once they are sold out.
